Project to redevelop the Morette memorial site

Redevelopment of the Morette site

The redevelopment of the Morette museum is an excellent idea. It is a memorial site that was previously only partially open to the public and will now be able to accommodate far more visitors. There are periods in our history that must not be forgotten.

But more visitors will inevitably mean more traffic. And this issue has not been addressed. When leaving, visitors will only be able to use the RD909 in the direction of Alex Thônes and will seek to take the Morette junction towards La Balme de Thuy via the RD216 (a small road that is already very busy and not always easy to use).

A test using a sat-nav clearly shows this route for heading back towards Annecy.

The Morette junction is very difficult to navigate, so an increase in traffic will complicate matters even further.

So, although it has been overlooked in the redevelopment of the Morette site, it seems to me essential to link the problem of the Morette junction to that caused by the redevelopment of the Morette site.

Dear Investigating Commissioner,

I wish to draw your attention to the need to improve safety at the junction between the RD909 and the RD216 by constructing a roundabout, which is essential in the context of the redevelopment of the Morette memorial site.

The RD909 currently carries more than 15,000 vehicles a day, including a significant number of heavy goods vehicles, making it particularly difficult to merge onto the road from the RD216. The RD216 is undergoing significant changes in usage: it serves not only the memorial site but also the walking trails in the Plaine du Fier and the Morette Waterfalls, which are very popular with families, walkers and cyclists.

The redevelopment of the Morette site further compounds these challenges:
the construction of a new Resistance museum,
reconstruction of the memorial hut and restoration of historic buildings,
expected visitor numbers rising to 35,000 per year, including many school groups,
coach traffic to the drop-off points,
creation of new accessible footpaths,
concentration of car parks and service access points around the area.

Added to this is a particular cause for concern: the exit from the car park for light vehicles heading towards Annecy. In its current state, it forces vehicles to merge directly into the dense and fast-moving traffic on the RD909. With the increase in tourist numbers, this situation will become very dangerous.

The installation of a roundabout at the RD909/RD216 junction would not only reduce speeds but also make the exit manoeuvre completely safe.
Making it compulsory to use the roundabout before continuing towards Annecy would provide a much safer solution for all visitors.
The junction is also home to:
bus stops for routes 62 and 63,
pedestrian traffic from the Fier footbridge and the underpass,
visitors from the Plaine du Fier and Cascades car parks,
an increasing number of walkers and cyclists.
The coexistence of these different uses requires robust safety measures.

A roundabout is the most coherent, protective and proportionate solution to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, local residents and visitors to the memorial site.
In view of all these factors, the creation of a roundabout appears to be fully justified and necessary to support the development of the Morette area whilst ensuring satisfactory safety conditions.
Thank you for considering this request.
